Witness

In the Guhenian system, witness is the very thing that spiritual seekers should cultivate in their practice of meditation and other methods. As Shankaracharya would say, "if you can have pure witness here and now, you do not need to meditate at all." One Vedanta book dealing with an inquiry into the nature of the "seer" and the "seen", says in the first paragraph: "The mind with its modifications is perceived, and the witness is verily the perceiver. But the witness is not perceived by any other."

Witness may be equated with pure consciousness or awareness, as well as with Brahman.

Also, it is quite interesting to note that methodologies like NLP that modify our thinking patterns may enable us to cultivate the power of witnessing as an "emergent property".
