- Tapping Your Personal Genius through NLP in Leadership -
(Application of Patterns of Excellence of NLP to Business)

The following is the program of the workshop held by Dr John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St. Clair in Japan on the 21st March 2005. This program was provided by Dr Grinder.

Title of Seminar:

Tapping Your Personal Genius through NLP in Leadership

Events proposed (subject to time constraints):
  • Modeling (discussion)

  • Verbal Package (discussion and exercise)

  • Perceptual positions (discussion and exercise)

  • Personal development (and development of teams - e.g. new products, new services) (discussion and exercise)

  • Topics - informal leaders and other topics of interest to the members of the audience

This one day workshop is designed to introduce members of the Japanese business community to a small sample of the patterning in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

NLP itself is first and foremost a modeling technology - a set of practices which make it possible to faithfully capture, systematically extract and efficiently transfer patterning from the most able, competent and creative individuals and teams available to us - the geniuses - to those of us with a desire to significantly improve our ability to perform with excellence in whatever field or discipline of human activity we are committed to.

The closest practice in business to this NLP modeling activity is best practices. During the quarter century or so that best practices has been a part of business culture (we speak now of the USA business community), there has been a consistent gap or discrepancy between its promise (the process of transferring the skills sets and behaviors of the very best representatives and teams in business practice to the rest of the business community) and what it has delivered. There has been some limited success in explicating and transferring some production processes (e.g. lean manufacturing) and distinct improvements in activities such as customer service but these successes fail far short of the vision originally motivating the introduction of best practices. It is now clear what component of the process is missing. Humans who have achieved the highest levels of performance in business, sports, academia... - the geniuses - have little or no competency in making explicit either what they do as their present advanced level of functioning or how (through what specific processes) historically they came to such a mastery of these practices.

The missing element is an appreciation of and the competency to gain access to the unconscious portions of their performance - neither the geniuses themselves nor those who have historically attempted to make the elements of their performance (and their sequencing) clear, transparent and most importantly, transferable have not had the necessary technology to investigate the role of unconscious functioning in these activities. The results, in general, have been a flat and disappointing representation of the high performances of these geniuses. NLP as practiced by John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St. Clair (Quantum Leap, Inc.) has a well-developed set of patterns which explicitly allow access to those portions of the unconscious functioning of the geniuses and thus offers a solution to this complex and challenging problem. This process of modeling, as mentioned above, is the core activity of NLP.

Through this modeling process, a significant number of patterns of excellence - patterns extracted from the performance of various geniuses in diverse fields - have been codified and offered to the public in fields such as medicine, business practice, therapy, sports, performing arts...

The vast majority of activity in NLP at present focuses on application of this set of patterns of excellence. The program offered by John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St. Clair will focus on selected patterns from this set of transparent and clear value in their application for business men and women.

These two presenters, Grinder and Bostic, have identified a set of specific patterns that they intend to present as part of this one day program. This set includes:

  1. the verbal package - a simple and elegant set of language patterns whose integration into a company's culture produces excellent results at the levels of productivity, profitability and quality of work experience. Its use by an individual signals to co-workers an effectiveness and precion in thinking and communication characteristic of leaders, both formal and informal. If information in a timely and precise form is the life blood of a well-functioning corporation, this package integrated into its culture assures its availability and accuracy. Historically, information was used as an instrument to promote personal agendas, often to the detriment of corporate objectives. This tool set implies the position (and supplies the concrete instruments to ensure) that all information (unless explicitly identified publicly by the formal leadership of the corporation) is freely available throughout the company. This distribution of information is essential if the intellectual and behavioral contributions of all members of the company are to be put into play in achieving the company's goals.

  2. perceptual positions - the ability to put oneself into the perceptual reality of another person with the intention of appreciating precisely how they perceive and response to actions, plans, strategies under consideration. The personal use of this leads to significantly increased effectiveness as a leader. The explicit practice of this set of patterns as an integrated part of the company's culture offers profound insight into the customers' experience of the company's products and services and of equal importance, in its deeper forms, the generation of new products and services, the engine of competitive advantage. Through this ability to sense, even prior to the conscious recognition on the part of the customer, leads to the ability to identify and bring to market innovation in product and service that constitutes the edge in business.

  3. personal development - the New Code of NLP has developed a series of content-free activities - literally games - whose entire purpose is to create high-performance states in its players. Through the technology of context manipulation and anchoring, it allows the player to select prior to the game beginning, a specific set of contexts into which this high-performance state can be integrated such that simply re-entering any member of that selected set of contexts reactivates the high-performance state achieved during the game and the behaviors of high effectiveness and innovative issue. The set of high-performance state that are generated by the New Code games are particularly powerful in creative bursts of activity, thinking and acting outside of the confines of "conventional" behavior. The disciplined use of high-performance states carries enormous implications for both the individual leaders as well as the performance of the company as a whole.

  4. the presentation of a number of key issues in leadership practices such as the identification, recruitment and deployment of informal leaders as time permits and the interest of the audience indicates. Members of the audience will be invited to indicate which business topics are of the most interest to them early in the day and the presenters will select from those requests the ones where they can add the most value.

Participants will be invited to participate in direct experiences in order to appreciate the patterning described above.

The seminar leaders, John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St. Clair are well aware of significant cultural differences between business practice in Japan and the United States and Western Europe. The patterns selected for presentation have been tested effect in a number of cultures - it will be of great interest to note which particular form they will take in the Japanese business community.

Grinder and Bostic invite interested members of the Japanese business community to a highly experiential and interactive experience in this seminar.

We await your arrival with pleasure!
